MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT AND THE CT LABORATORY: AN OVERVIEW

The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) receives numerous phone calls and e-mails each week from individuals who are concerned with their compliance to state Medicare reimbursement and private payer insurance policies. Over the past several years, several states have adopted payment policy for the reimbursement of computed tomography procedures, requiring accreditation of the laboratory. A complete listing of payment policies of which the ICACTL is aware can be found at Payment Policies.

MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT AND THE ICACTL

THE ICACTL DOES:

Attempt to stay abreast of Medicare and private payer policies as a service to the computed tomography community

Communicate information to computed tomography laboratories about Medicare and private payer policies (through the ICACTL web site and mailings to laboratories)

Employ knowledgeable staff to assist laboratories with basic questions about payment policies

Provide, upon request, the same information to Medicare and private payers as we publish in the accredited laboratory listing on the web site

THE ICACTL DOES NOT:

Establish rules or regulations for Medicare or private insurance carriers

Have the authority to make decisions regarding implementation dates, extensions, etc.

Have responsibility for notifying providers of computed tomography testing services of Medicare or private payer policies

Tamara Sloper, IAC Marketing Director, is available to answer your general questions about payment policy and reimbursement. She may be contacted toll-free at 800-838-2110, or via email at sloper@intersocietal.org.
